Roberto González se graduó de psicólogo en la Escuela de Psicología de la P. Universidad Católica de Chile en 1992. Posteriormente se doctoró en Psicología en la Universidad de Kent, Reino Unido, a fines del 2000. A partir del 2010 fue nombrado profesor titular de la P. Universidad Católica de Chile. Su investigación y publicaciones se enfocan en el estudio del contacto intergrupal, relaciones y emociones intergrupales, el prejuicio, los procesos de aculturación que involucran a inmigrantes peruanos en Chile, conductas de ayuda, movimientos sociales, así como también actitudes y conductas de reparación asociadas a conflictos políticos y étnicos. Colabora en una extensa red internacional de investigadores de Inglaterra, Alemania, Estados Unidos, Suiza, Bélgica, Holanda, Israel, Australia y Nueva Zelandia. Es co-fundador del Centro de Medición Mide UC, donde actualmente se desempeña como director alterno. Actualmente, es investigador principal del Centro de Estudios de Conflicto y Cohesión Social (COES) e investigador asociado del Centro de Estudios Interculturales e Indígenas (CIIR). Es miembro de varias organizaciones científicas americanas y europeas, donde ha ejercido cargos en directorios académicos (Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues y la International Society of Political Psychology). Recientemente fue elegido presidente de la International Society of Political Psychology. Participa en diversos comités editoriales de revistas científicas nacionales e internacionales y desde 2015 se desempeña como editor asociado de la Revista de Psicología Social (International Journal of Social Psychology). Se ha desempañado en distintos cargos de gestión en P. Universidad Católica de Chile: secretario académico, director del programa de postgrado y director de la Escuela de Psicología, y Vicerrector Académico de la Universidad. En el ámbito de las políticas públicas, fue nombrado miembro de la comisión “Políticas Migratorias en Chile” por parte del Senado de la República de Chile, en 2016; miembro del directorio de la Red Internacional de Investigadores en Migración y Políticas Públicas del Departamento de Extranjería y Migración del Ministerio del Interior y Seguridad Pública, en 2016; y miembro del Consejo Asesor para la Cohesión Social del Ministerio de Desarrollo Social y Familia, en 2020.
